The country of Luxembourg is made public transportation free for the whole country. These public transportation include trains, buses, and trams. The goal is to limit the amount of cars that people ride in order to reduce traffic and pollution. Although it is one of the smallest countries in the world, they have a big traffic problem. The country is located between Belgium, France, and Germany. Therefore, almost 200,000 people come there from different countries each day. This means many people are driving from other countries since they are connected to one another. During the times when people drive to and from work have the most traffic jam. Therefore, free public transport is the solution to solve the traffic issues and decrease pollution. This solution is even more so better for the poor people.
This is a good idea to help improve the issues the country is facing. But I feel like this takes away people's freedom from driving their own cars that they have worked to purchase. Especially since people can afford to drive instead of taking public transport. People like their freedom and independence so when the government tries to enforce policies that take away agency there can be problems. I think if people were really concerned about the traffic jams they would take the public transport to work but if people are not then they should not be making suggestions for them to use public transport. Some people may enjoy driving to work because it is more convenient for them or maybe they have certain materials that they need to transport to and from work and so they do not want to take public transportation.
This brings me to the point about how sometimes the government can make decisions for the people without even asking them about how they feel about the change. What is the point of a democracy if the government does not ask people about how they feel but rather go ahead and make policy that may suit the minority or the elite? A true democracy makes every effort to make the citizens a part of daily government decisions. I feel like when we think of democracy it only applies during times of voting. But democracy goes beyond that and citizens do not know the rights that they have so they become comfortable and allow the government to do as they please.
